A 9-Step Comprehensive Guide to Opening Your Pool This Summer

Finally, the mercury is rising again after a long stretch of winter and the long-awaited pool season is finally here!

If you are like any other American, your fiberglass pool was most likely closed off during the cold. So, what are the steps to opening your pool successfully? Let’s get ready for the dive!

What Do You Need to Open Your Pool?

Gather your supplies before you commence the preparation. You will need the following things in your basket. -

●     A soft broom/brush that doesn’t damage the fiberglass pool.

●     Chemicals to clean your pool.

●     Safety goggles in case an irritant finds its way to your eyes.

●     Chemical resistant rubber gloves.

●     Garden hose

●     Strong soap to clean the pool cover. (You can use the soap you use for washing your car)

●     And a can of cream soda to congratulate yourself for the hustle

But let’s not count our eggs before they hatch. We have got our work cut out for us.

How to Prepare Your Pool for Opening in 9 Simple Steps?

STEP 1 -

The first step in the process is to remove the pool cover. The long winter months will show up on the cover as accumulated dust and grime. Once you scrub the pool cover clean, stow it away safely to be used the next winter.

STEP 2 -

Now fill your pool up to halfway between the skimmer openings and the tile line. Keep adding water to the pool over the week to maintain the desired water level. If your pool has an auto-fill feature, run it, and inspect if it is working fine.

STEP 3 -

It is common for leaves and other debris to find their way into the pool during the off-season. Pick out the debris and clean out the pool.

STEP 4 -

Any pool contractor will tell you how essential it is to clean your pool filter before summer kicks off. Ideally, you should also clean your filter before you close the pool for the winter but if you haven’t, there’s even more reason to clean it now. Check the grids for signs of damage. If you have a sand filter that hasn’t been changed in the last 5 years, change the sand. Examine the O-rings and the filter gauge. You should also add a D.E after the filter has been back washed.

STEP 5 -

It’s now time to replace the winterizing plugs with drain plugs for the heater, filter, and pump. You can use Teflon tape to control leaks and drips.

STEP 6 -

Prime the pump and filter by eliminating air in the plumbing lines. Find a garden hose to water the suction lines. Turn on the filter pressure gauge relief and check the starting PSI. Inspect the controller at different hours, speeds, and pressures. Check for leaks in the filtration system. Finally, open the suction, return plumbing lines, and clean out clogs using the multi-port valve.

STEP 7 -

Once you have checked the machinery, you will next want to make sure that the pool water is at an adequate pH and other chemical concentrations. You can get any type of pool water testing kit from the hardware store.

STEP 8 -

Finally, cleaning time! Scrub the algae off the wall and use chlorine to get rid of the remnants. Disinfect the pool using chlorine or an MPS. Get your cleaning supplies ready. This includes the aforementioned pool chemicals and poles, skimmer nets, vacuum head and hose, brushes, and a vacuum plate. Cleaning your pool should ensure that the water is disinfected, chemically balanced, and the pool algae-free.

STEP 9 -

Voila! Your pool is ready for business this summer! Grab your swimwear and a floatie, chill in your pool with a good book in one hand and cream soda in the other.
